When you take a close look at your closet space, there may come a time in life when you find yourself drawn to the idea of a capsule wardrobe. The term “capsule wardrobe” refers to stepping away from fashion pieces that are low quality and easy to fall out of love with after a few months. A capsule wardrobe focuses instead on well-made, timeless items—pieces that feel good and never really go out of style. In the long run, it saves you time and money while giving your style a consistency that always feels classic and effortlessly chic.

Now, what about your skincare drawer? Could the same philosophy apply there? Are we adding to our cart just because trendy products are catching our eye rather than sticking with a consistent routine? A research-backed article from CleanSkinClub.com notes that “34% of shoppers purchased a viral or trending product in the past year—up from 17% in 2024—with Gen Z (40%) and millennials (39%) most likely to buy based on social media buzz.” As a consumer, the skincare market can feel genuinely overwhelming. With paid ads and influencer campaigns touting the latest and greatest, it’s easy to get sucked into buying something that is maybe not an absolute essential.

While your skin can benefit from a range of treatments and serums—antioxidants, peptides, exfoliants, azelaic acid, and more—it’s surprisingly easy to overwhelm it. Too many active ingredients can leave your barrier stressed and reactive. Sometimes the most restorative move is stepping back, simplifying, and embracing a “less is more” approach. This helps you really get to know your skin, so you can understand what it needs in the future and become more intentional on what you’re adding to your capsule skincare shelf.

If you’re feeling lost in your routine, craving consistency, or wanting to return to the basics, this article is for you.

If I were to create a capsule skincare shelf, I would gravitate to these four main pillars before adding any other products into my routine:

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Stabilized retinoid
  • Barrier repair-focused moisturizer
  • High-protection SPF

Consider this routine the “little black dress” of skincare. Timeless, long-lasting and essential. Here’s why:

Gentle Cleanser

Effectively cleansing your skin is the backbone of a good routine. Using a gentle, durable cleanser will provide your skin with a soothing experience without stripping your skin. Additionally, you can use your water-based cleanser twice for a “double cleanse” to further ensure all SPF, sweat and grime from the day are removed.

Product Recommendations:

A Stabilized Retinoid

Retinoids stand as some of the most thoroughly studied ingredients in all of skincare. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that speed up cellular turnover to stimulate collagen production. Retinoids assist with a myriad of skincare concerns such as acne, uneven texture, fine lines and hyperpigmentation. If you have a tretinoin prescription, this is the gold standard. If you’re looking for an over-the-counter ingredient, look no further than retinaldehyde. Retinaldehyde only has to go through one conversion within your skin to become retinoic acid (aka tretinoin). Whereas, retinol has to go through two conversions. This makes retinaldehyde ultimately more effective. Additionally, looking for a stabilized retinaldehyde is key. This means the product has been formulated to withstand environmental factors like light, oxygen and heat that would cause the product to lose its effectiveness.

Barrier Repair-Focused Moisturizer

The skin barrier is your body’s defense against environmental stressors and moisture loss. If your skin barrier is damaged, your skin becomes more susceptible to dryness, redness, irritation and breakouts. Incorporating a moisturizer that mimics your skin’s natural lipids and supports repair can make your skin more resilient and noticeably healthier.

Ingredients to look for in a barrier repairing moisturizer:

  • Occlusives: petrolatum, shea butter, dimethicone, squalene
  • Humectants: glycerin, urea, polyglutamic acid, hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA, panthenol
  • Lipids: ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids

A High Protection SPF

The most essential product of all. UV rays are responsible for about 90% of visible skin aging. Even if you’re not much of an outdoorsy type, the impact is all around us. SkinCancer.org notes that “UVB rays, the primary sunburn ray, are largely blocked by glass; but more than 50 percent of UVA rays, the main cause of premature skin aging, can penetrate glass.” The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a minimum of SPF 30 for daily use. SPF 30 blocks against 97% of UVB rays while SPF 50 blocks against 98% of UVB rays. Ideally, I lean toward a higher SPF because I want the most protection possible for my skin. Whether you choose SPF 30 or 50, you’re still getting solid coverage as long as you reapply consistently throughout the day. Additionally, look for terms such as “Broad Spectrum” or PA ratings. Broad spectrum indicates that the product is protecting you from UVA and UVB rays. “PA” stands for “Protection Grade of UVA.” PA+++ indicates strong UVA protection, while PA++++ offers the highest level, giving you maximum UVA coverage along with UVB protection. Without SPF, your retinoid can’t do its job—sun exposure essentially undoes the benefits you’re trying to achieve. Sunscreen helps guard against skin conditions, slows visible aging, reduces hyperpigmentation, supports your moisture barrier, and maintains overall skin health. Finding one you love will make all the difference. Tip: if your skin leans oily–skip your morning moisturizer and just use your SPF.
